Ice Cream Report

I scream, you scream...we all scream for ice cream! Well, it's about time we focus our attention on a really pressing issue---where to get the richest, creamiest, most delicious ice cream. So thanks to listeners and callers from across the country, here's the scoop on where to go and what to get. You do have to bring your own napkins though. Enjoy!

Lois from Lynn suggested heading to Salem to visit Puleo's Dair, where you can still get fresh ice cold milk in bottles. She also recommended McCaw's in Marblehead and Salem.

Ed from Boston remembered heading out to Bedford Farms in Bedford for the famous banana bucket---ice cream, several bananas, whipped cream, toppings, more ice cream, more bananas, more toppings...well, you get the picture. Now his favorite summer cooler is a coffee frappe (that's a milk shake for those of you from out of town) with a scoop of chocolate ice cream. Welcome to mocha heaven!

If you're on the south shore of Boston, do what Jean does. Head to Peaceful Meadows in Whitman, on Rte. 18. It's another great dairy featuring homemade ice cream. And don't you just love the name of the place?

John called from Pennsylvania and recommended a trip to the Kenoble's Grove theme park near Danville, P.A. for delicious ice cream served on fresh, hot waffles.

Sarah from New York State told us about The Peanut Principle on Rte. 9 in Latham, N.Y. as you head towards Saratoga. Yummy!

Tom from Watertown is a slave to Friendly's Forbidden Chocolate. When he's on the road he often stops at Dean Dairy in Watertown and Cabot's in Newton, just off the Mass Pike. I've been there several times. Expect a long line. It's that good!

My pal Oscar , originally from Russia, says if you don't mind taking a bit of a trek, head to Vienna, Austria for the very best ice cream in the world. Their sausages aren't bad either!

Jerry Burke , our overnight traffic reporter, comes from the Pocono Mountains region of New York State and raves about Manning's Ice Cream in his hometown. He denies that banana splits are served in heart shaped bath tubs!

J.P. from the seacoast of New Hampshire recommends Go Licks in Dover, N.H.

Mike of Waltham knows ice cream. At 6'3" and about 400 lbs., he's had his share. He says to try Rancatore's in Belmont for their sweet cream. Mike also told us that it was Brigham's in Boston that invented coffee ice cream. Yeah baby!!!

Tom in Ohio said whatever you do, make sure to head to Handels in Youngstown, O.H. for the chocolate pecan.

Jane in Monkton, M.D. wrote to me about LaDuc's in Wales, W.I., just outside of Milwaukee, and Grunning's in South Orange, N.J.  If you're heading south, try Blue Bell ice cream made in Brenham, T.X. You can find it in some southern chain stores and at the Houston and Dallas airports.

Joe of Cambridge suggests Kimball's in Littleton...I've been there myself, and the ice cream is outstanding. But watch out, the lines are long!!!

Eliana from Newton loves Herrel's Ice Cream stores in Cambridge and on Newbury Street in Boston, particularly for their chocolate pudding ice cream special. And if you want to try something delicious and virtually fat free, try the chocolate sorbet at Ciao Bella on Newbury Street and The Blue Ginger in Wellesley.

Jesse of Plymouth loves Maximillians in Plymouth and told me that if you want a really great dessert, try the chocolate fudge brownie at Ben and Jerry's .

Connie in Brockton said not to miss the Dresser Hill Dairy in Charlton.

Dave in Braintree brought up a name from my past-- Stannies in Holbrook, home of the H-Bomb Neutralizer--for only the bravest and hungriest.

Paul from Ohio has dined at Meadowlands in Tewksbury, M.A. and recommends it to the WBZ audience.

Finally, when you're up in the Newburyport area, don't forget to stop in and say hello to my friend Steve, owner of Gramm's Ice Cream right there in downtown Newburyport.
